Ducks Use Waterproof Feathers to Stay Dry
Ducks coat their feathers with oil from a gland near their tail, making water bead up and roll off. This natural raincoat keeps them buoyant and warm even when swimming all day. The oil also helps them float like little boats on the surface of ponds and lakes.
๐ก Fun detail:
Scientists discovered that without this oil, ducks would get completely soaked and could have trouble staying afloat, proving how important their built-in waterproofing really is.
