Bose-Einstein Condensate Forms New State
When certain gases are cooled to within billionths of a degree above absolute zero, their atoms merge into a single quantum wave called a Bose-Einstein condensate. In this state, individual atoms lose their separate identities and behave as one giant atom.
๐ก Fun detail:
The condensate can slow light pulses to a few meters per second, turning a normally zippy beam into something crawl-like.
