Mesoamerican Chocolate Rituals
Long before chocolate became a sweet treat, the Maya and Aztec peoples used cocoa beans as currency and prepared a bitter, spiced drink called xocolatl that was reserved for royalty and religious ceremonies. The drink was often mixed with chili, vanilla, and flowers, then poured from a great height to create a frothy top that symbolized the foam on sacred lakes. Today, many communities still honor these ancient recipes.
